Solar Power For Homes, What Are The Advantages Of Solar Energy?

mike legg asked:

Did you know that solar power for homes is one of the most reliable of the renewable energy sources (green energy) that is available? And it is well within the budgets of most people. For this reason solar power for homes is also the most popular of the alternative forms of energy. No wonder then that some of the biggest searches on Google and other search engines are from people looking for information on how to build a solar panel, or for how to Do-It-Yourself solar power.

So what are the main advantages of solar energy?

Solar panels for home use are exactly the same as the huge industrial size solar panels, only smaller of course. They are powered by natural light so you do not have to live somewhere were the sun is blazing down all day long, as solar panels for home will still work in less sunny places. You can also start off as small as you like with just enough solar panels to run your lighting and then add to them as and when you wish.

Other advantages of solar energy are that they can be installed in any house old or new. For new houses they can be designed to fit snugly on the roof where they can directly catch heat and sunlight. With existing properties solar panels for home can be mounted on brackets and positioned in the most suitable place. This makes solar power for homes available for anyone to install by themselves without the heavy cost of professional installations.

There are many guides and instruction manuals available on the internet that can show you how to build a solar panel. With these guides and a little bit of DIY knowledge you can easily and cheaply have your own solar energy supply up and running in days. So another of the advantages of solar energy is that it can be installed by the homeowner in the form of DIY solar panels.

As I mentioned before you can start off with a few solar panels, just enough to power your lights or maybe enough to power a workshop or hobby shop. Once you see how efficient solar power for homes is you can add to it whenever you want so that you can provide enough solar energy to power your whole home. There are even solar cookers available that use absolutely no fuel other than solar power. The only limitation to these solar cookers is that they may take a little longer to cook things, but when you think that it is doing it for free this is just a minor inconvenience.

Of course one of the best of the advantages of solar energy is the fact that it is totally green with no pollution or wasteful by-products  such as harmful gases, this means that you are not contributing to global warming, in fact you are actually lowering your carbon footprint. And do not forget the biggest of the advantages of solar energy, ITS TOTALLY FREE ENERGY and the cost of the power you produce with your solar power for homes will not rise in the future.

Homemade Solar Power System – Save your bill and save the earth

Darren Chow asked:

There are different ways that you can use to reduce the energy costs of your household. One of these methods is the use of solar power system. Many individuals make use of the solar power system so that they can save money and help the environment at the same time. That is right! You can help protect the environment while saving money if you utilize solar power system. There are some individuals that do not care about the environment and their rising energy bills. What they do is cut down their power usage so that the energy bill would go down. This is a good idea to lessen the expenses of the household. However, in a span of few months, the energy bills will escalate again.

Energy can really be expensive especially if the suppliers of the fuel hike prices. As a result, you will have to pay more for the same amount of electricity that you consume. This is a bad thing especially if you are trying to save money. You may try to lessen the energy consumption by reducing the usage of your appliances. You can benefit in doing this but only for a short amount of time. After a short while, you are back again to your battle in energy reduction.

Moreover, in the near future you will surely suffer from the high energy bills because the natural fuel reserves of earth are limited. The natural fuel reserves may even deplete in just a few decades. That kind of situation can be a great peril to our generation and the next generations. For that reason, it is best to make use of what you have today, and that is the solar power system. You do not only save money from energy bills, you are also saving the environment by reducing the harmful fumes that many people create.

If you make use of the solar energy right now, you will be able to satisfy the energy needs of your house. This is due to that you may be able to run most of the appliance in your house using the solar energy system. The photovoltaic cells can help power most of the lighting and heating devices in your house thus helping you reduce energy consumptions. As a result, you will only need to pay a cheap energy bill. In addition, you are helping reduce the carbon dioxide, which causes global warming. This is a great help for our planet because global warming can be the biggest threat the world may ever face. Therefore, it is best to make use of solar power system to prevent further production of carbon dioxide, which can greatly harm our planet. So, think now and make use of the solar power system.

Solar Power Canada

John Tahan asked:

I am sure that you noticed homes that have huge tinted windows in them when driving by. You may ask yourself why anyone would want such tall windows in their house. The reason is simple, they are using the sun to heat their homes and power all appliances and electronic devices. You may also have noticed solar panels on top of houses installed purposely to collect and transform the sun’s rays into current.

It is very possible to build a solar power system yourself by doing a little bit of research on the topic. If you have access to the internet like most of the planet do, then you will find some free and paid information about solar power Canada systems. Of course if you pay for the information, you will no doubt get a much better package put together, guides and videos for about $50.00. It is well worth the investment in order to build your own home solar power system for under $200.00 that will enable you to save thousands of dollars on your energy bill. After all, the sun is free.

Canadian houses like any other houses around the world are built to use solar power with just a few minor alterations to make. Make sure that your house is not blocked by huge trees, and also make sure you have plenty of windows facing the sun when it rises to the south side of your house. Solar Power Canada systems like in many countries don’t rely on the sun shinning all the time but rather, they are built to store a great amount of power from the sun in batteries. You can rest assured that even in the cold Canadian winters when you don’t see the sun for days, it is still possible to have sufficient solar power reserve until the sun makes its appearance again. You also have to lean how to conserve that energy by maybe converting to more power efficient appliances, electronic devices and light bulbs. You can also install ceiling fans to disperse the hot or cold air in appropriate seasons; metal insulated doors are also a good choice for keeping the cold out during those Canadian winter months. Solar power Canada systems are built for the primary reason of saving the planet and the environment. The second and obvious reason is of course saving money, a great amount so you can enjoy life a little more with the savings you will benefit from by installing or building your own home solar power system.

What to Know Before Purchasing Home Solar Electricity

Jon asked:

Getting home solar electricity is more affordable today than it was 10 years ago.  In fact, the federal government and many state governments are currently offering tax rebates to persons that choose to convert to home solar electricity.  If installing a photovoltaic system to supply your home solar electricity is too far out of your financial abilities, there are also programs available to purchase your utilities from an accredited green energy supplier.  Green energy suppliers offer only utilities fueled by renewable resources, such as solar electricity, hydroelectricity and wind generated electricity.  However, if you made the decision to switch to solar electricity for your home it is important to determine your electricity needs before you start shopping.

The first thing you have to determine is how much power you will need from your home solar electricity system.  Different arrays and solar panel set-ups offer different wattage outputs.  Take the time to determine your average daily electricity usage.  You want to achieve a number that includes the entire year and affords for the different amount of energy used during winter and summer months (more lights, heaters, air conditioners).

When shopping for the right photovoltaic system to supply your home solar electricity definitely research the quality of the product.  A product offering 13% efficiency and a lifetime warranty will be far more valuable than the panel offering 15% efficiency and a one-year warranty.  Ask neighbors, friends and even strangers currently using home solar electricity, to learn more about the differences in systems.  Sufficient time should also be spent interviewing installers and researching manufacturers as well.

A final decision needs to be made as to what kind of system you would like to use to supply your home solar electricity.  There are generally three types of solar panel systems used to supply home solar electricity.  The first type is a grid-tied system in which your solar panels are tied into your current power meter.  You are using both electricity supplied by your panels and your supply is then backed by electricity from your electric company.  The second available solar panel system for supplying home solar electricity is a grid-tie with battery backup.  With this system you are collecting electricity from you panels, filling your batteries for emergencies and then the excess is sent back to the electric company through your meter.  The final system is a stand-alone system.  Very similar to the grid-tied system with battery backup except that you are completely disconnected or maybe never connected to a major utility provider for your area.

Once you educate yourself on providing your home solar electricity, you are probably ready to start shopping.  Remember that converting to home solar electricity is an investment and you will reap the rewards over time.  And don’t forget the pride you will have with reducing your carbon footprint by converting to home solar electricity.

Residential Solar Electricity – renewable energy home solar power system

Bret Parker asked:

Generating solar electricity using your own renewable energy home solar power system fits the circumstances and values of some home owners. Although it takes time and money to make a home solar power system, many home owners enjoy the independence they gain and the knowledge that their actions are helping the environment.

A renewable energy home solar power system can be used to supply some or all of the homes electricity needs. Some home owners, especially those in remote areas, use the solar electricity from their home solar power system in place of electricity supplied to them by the power electric companies.

Some home owners connect their home solar power system to the grid and use them to reduce the amount of conventional grid power supplied to them. A grid connected system allows you to sell any excess solar power you produce back to your power company.

Before you purchase and install a renewable energy home solar power system, home owner needs to work out the peak electricity load and build a suitable size renewable energy home solar power system that can meet all or some of your electricity needs.

Designing a new home you should work with the builder to incorporate your renewable energy home power system to have the power system installed during the build process. This will be a great start to building an energy-efficient home.

Operating Your System Off-Grid

For many home owners powering their homes using renewable energy home solar power system that is not connected to the electricity power grid is called a stand-alone power electric system which makes economic sense and appeals to their environmental issues and the stand-alone power system takes advantage of a combination of techniques to generate reliable solar electric power, reducing costs, and minimize the need to using fossil fuel and reducing the amount of electricity required to meet their needs.

In remote locations and if your house is positioned some distant from the power lines, a stand-alone systems can be more cost-effective than constructing a power line [cable] from the house to the power grid as is may be a long distant and every costly with the price of copper these days.

Stand alone systems are also used by home owners that live near the power grid and wish to remain independence from the power company and are committed to a “green electricity” environment issues to use non polluting energy sources.

Operating Your System connected to the grid.

While renewable energy home solar power system is capable of powering a home without any connection to the power grid, many home owners prefer the advantages that grid connection offers. Smaller solar panels and a solar power system as the large energy consuming devices can stay connected to the power grid.

A grid connected power system allows you to power your home with renewable energy during periods when the sun is shining, or when the wind is blowing. Any excess electricity you produce is fed back into the power grid. When renewable resources are unavailable, electricity from the power grid supplies the home needs, thus eliminating the expense of battery storage bank that may consist of several batteries connected in series parallel.

In addition, power companies in most states allow net metering, an arrangement where the excess solar electricity generated by grid-connected renewable energy home solar power system reverses your electric power meter as the electricity is fed back into the power grid.

The power company gives you credit for any power difference between what you used and what you produced during any month. Some months you may pay a small power bill and other months the power company will give credit for the solar electricity put back into the power grid.

Home Solar Power Systems: How Many Kilowatts (kws) are Created?

Daniel Stouffer asked:

thing you might ask – what is solar radiation and how does it related to solar generated electricity? That is a good question and a topic discussed in our next article in our series dedicated to home solar power. This article, on the other hand, explains how kilowatts are calculated based upon the energy output of your solar array. We will also highlight the difference between solar cells connected in parallel versus in series.

The average American home uses about 25 kWh of electricity per day. The following example illustrates how to calculate the power produced by a residential solar energy system. Looking over a solar radiation grid, we can determine that a residence gets five daylight hours of solar radiation in one day which is then averaged out over the entire year.

Solar radiation maps are highlighted on may websites throughout the Internet. You can do a quick search for “solar radiation” to find one. In any area across the entire United States, they detail out the amount of sunshine hitting a given location based upon the time of year and its address.

Calculating the power from a solar energy system

Divide the average kWh per day by the average sun hours per day. For this example, we take 25 kWh divided by 5 hours of sun per day = 5 kW system This 5 kW system will generate 25 kWhs under optimal conditions in direct sunlight for 5 hours, or 25 kWh on an average day with some at peak production and most of the sunlight at less than optimal angles.

Future articles related to solar energy will continue to explain the effects of sun angle, reflection, and refraction on the design, output, and installation of solar panels.

Energy as it Pertains to Solar Modules

Individual solar modules that are measured in watts have a particular voltage (around 40 volts) and a particular amperage (around 5 amps). A solar module with 40 volts and 5 amps is called a 200-watt module, which means that it has the potential to produce 200 watts of electricity when in direct sunlight, away from trees or shading, and clear of snow or debris. Since most electrical components around your house are only rated for 600 volts DC, it is rare to see a solar array with a string larger the 15 solar modules. On the other hand, since inverters need a minimum voltage or pressure to turn them on, you will seldom have a solar array with a string solar modules with a size smaller then 6.

Electrical components, like solar cells, panel modules or batteries, can be connected in either series or parallel. This makes a big difference in the total quantities of energy produced from the solar energy system, as well as the stability of the technology over time. Each solar module or component has a positive and a negative pole. In essence, this is the same way batteries have their negative and positive poles arranged. Take a look at how you but batteries in a flashlight. Same idea here. The manner in which these poles are connected makes a big difference. Connect Solar Panels in Series

When you connect residential solar energy systems in series, you connect the positive (+) pole on one component to the negative (-) pole on the next. When modules are connected in series, the voltages are added. Adding voltage together in this fashion creates a long chain of solar modules all working together, depending upon each other, and creating a flow of current that increases along the length of the system.

These modules in series are called Strings. The average string is 8-12 modules so the voltage would be 320 – 480. Unfortunately, we encounter some negative aspects of of this type of construction.

Connecting Solar Panels in Parallel

When you connect solar panels or components in parallel, you connect the panels so current can travel to your inverter and to your house via multiple paths. Unlike adding solar modules in series which increases the volume of current as it goes, the solar panels connected in parallel has the effective of leaving the current or volume of electricity passing through the system the same.

Solar panels or strings of solar arrays tied together in parallel are called parallel systems. Their amps are combined together but the total voltage remains the same. Adding amps is like increasing the volume, the pressure stays the same but the volume goes up. Inverters can only handle so much volume so you will seldom see more than 1 to 3 strings in parallel; positive ends to positive ends with negative ends to negative ends.

One of the advantages of parallel connection is that electricity continues to flow, even though one of the components (or strings) is damaged. If a system is entirely in series, one damaged component stops the entire system. You may remember the ever-frustrating Christmas lights that were connected in series. Often difficult to trouble shoot, strings of lights connected in series are hard to fix when one bulb blew out. Now, the modern Christmas lights are connected in parallel. You are able to determine this easily. There are usually two different wires coming in and out of each bulb. You can feel this via their less frustrating maintenance and operation.

Options for Residential Solar Energy Systems

In this article, we explained in some detail how solar modules calculate the power they produce as well as how connecting solar arrays in series or parallel can have an large impact on energy output as well as complexity of design. Our next article will cover how sun angle affects solar energy systems and how to quantify the solar power produced from the sun.

New solar energy system rentals allow you to upgrade your home to solar generated electricity with no large system to purchase. You can rent the solar energy equipment needed to generate up to 100 percent of your electricity needs. Exciting aspects related to clean, green solar energy are emerging all around us.
